Losing weight can be good for your overall health and well-being, but certain diets come with some undesirable side effects. For example, low carb and low calorie diets can cause acetone breath or so called “keto breath,” which is sometimes described as abnormally sweet or fruity breath. Acetone breath is a symptom of ketosis – the process in which your body starts to burn stored fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. Bad breath due to ketosis can also occur when you are not eating enough, usually in conjunction with fasting or doing a diet that is very low in calories.
When low carb and low calorie diets cause acetone breath, the only way to eliminate it in the long-term is to change your diet. Consider adding more carbohydrates to your diet, for example whole wheat breads and pasta, and brown rice, and make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to help flush out the ketones from your body. Good oral hygiene can also help alleviate bad breath temporarily while you are trying to lose weight.
