A healthy lifestyle could be causing you unpleasant breath

Brits are more health conscious than ever, with over three quaters (77%) of us exercising at least once a week and almost two in ten people (17%) following diets including the 5:2 diet and Atkins. New research commissioned by CB12 FIRST CLASS BREATH reveals that although nearly a third of Brits (32%) admit their breath is occasionally unpleasant or in need of refreshing, very few of us are aware of the daily habbits that may be affecting our breath.1

Unpleasant mouth odour is often associated with being unhygienic, in fact, almost seven in 10 of us (68%) think it is the result of bad oral hygiene.1 However, what many people don't realise is that positive, healthy lifestyle choices can also affect your breath and is part of daily life. Amanda Hamilton, Nutritionist and Lifestyle expert and Dr Luke Thorley, Dentist, take a closer look at the surprising factors that might be causing you unpleasant breath:


  • Just under a fifth of people regularly cut out carbohydrates from their diet.1 If you are following a low carb diet such as Atkins you may notice an impact on your breath. These diets put your body in a state of ketosis (a metabolic state where most of the body's energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood) resulting in an unpleasant mouth odour.
  • Amanda comments: "Popular high protein and high fat diets, such as this season's Paleo Diet, can also affect your breath. This is because eating a lot of protein can cause an increase in levels of ammonia in the mouth which carries an unpleasant odour."

Skipping breakfast

  • A quarter of the nation (25%) admit to skipping breakfast on a regular basis1, which may be leading to unpleasant breath. You produce less saliva at night which dries out the mouth and creates the perfect environment for bacteria to grow hence the phrase "morning breath".
  • Luke explains: "Eating breakfast helps to stimulate saliva production which removes bacteria from the tongue keeping your breath fresh. When asked, just under a fifth of people (17%) said they would stop skipping breakfast if they knew it was causing foul breath."

Your daily coffee

  • We've all experienced coffee breath, but what you may not realise is that it isn't just the coffee that creates odour. Coffee is a diuretic which means it can dry out your mouth by slowing saliva production, which affects mouth odour.
  • Other compounds in coffee such as milk can also exacerbate odour as dairy contains dense proteins which are used as a food source by the sulphur-producing bacteria in the mouth.
  • Luke comments: "Try following your morning coffee with a glass of water to help rehydrate and wash away bacteria from the mouth."

Working out 

  • A third of people (30%) regularly go to the gym or exercise, and more people than ever are pushing themselves to the limit, taking on triathlons and 'urban' fitness tests such as the 'Iron Man' challenge. However, when quizzed on the causes of unpleasant breath, less than 5% of Brits were aware that exercise can contribute to foul breath.1
  • Amanda comments: "Not only is hydration essential for peak performance when you're working-out, but it can also help keep your breath fresh as dehydration causes oral bacteria to thrive resulting in the production of Volatile Sulphur Compounds (smelly gases). Make sure you have a bottle of water on you at all times when working-out and sip every 10 to 20 minutes to stay properly hydrated."
