10 Tips for Great Oral Health

From a very young age we’ve been told to brush our teeth twice a day and floss after every meal. Dental health has always been given prime importance – and for good reason. Not only will it reduce your need to sit in that understandably traumatising dentist’s chair, but it will also keep potentially harmful infections in your mouth at bay.

However, practicing good oral hygiene isn’t as simple as it sounds. You’ll find a myriad of information on what needs to be done to improve the health of your teeth and gums, from complex brushing motions that you will inevitably fail to remember, to using suspicious charcoal-based products for instant whitening.

Good oral hygiene includes not only brushing, flossing and a best mouthwash to top it off, but also keen attention and proper time allocation. When it comes to maintaining your oral health, you simply can’t rush!

#1: Brushing twice a day is just the bare minimum!

When it comes to brushing, once is never good enough. We’ve been taught to brush at least twice a day to ward off the cavities and bacteria. Remember the word ‘at least’ was used so that means two times is the bare minimum target you should achieve.

Brushing right after waking up is essential but even more important is brushing your teeth before calling it a night. That’s because all the food debris from the day can get stuck in your teeth and mouth, and without a good brush you might just be allowing the bacteria to replicate while you snooze off. This will increase your risk of getting an infection, cavities and build up plaques.

Some extra careful people will brush after every meal and we’re totally on board with that! There’s no harm in overdoing brushing your teeth.

#2: Make and follow a routine

It’s always a good idea to make your dental care routine as systematic as you would make your skincare routine. This will not only help you remember everything you need to do, but there will also be less chance of you ever forgetting your routine altogether.

#3: Don’t underestimate the power of flossing

Flossing can be tedious, we agree. Sometimes the floss can get stuck between the teeth instead of helping the food fibre get unstuck – that’s always the worst. But believe us when we say flossing is absolutely essential if you want great oral health.

#4: Brush the right way

Sometimes you could be brushing enough times but it still won’t be adequate. The quality of brushing matters a lot, and by that we don’t mean you need to memorise complex motions of how each individual tooth needs to be brushed. The simple thing you need to remember is to take your time.

As already mentioned before, you simply cannot afford to rush through your dental care routine. Brushing for a minimum of 2 minutes is important to remove plaque and get rid of the bacteria harbouring your oral cavity.

You should also brush the insides of your cheek and the back of your tongue to eliminate the bacteria that cause bad breath.

#5: Use the right products

You can’t compromise on the quality of the dental products you use for good oral hygiene. It’s tempting to reach out to cheap toothpastes and mouthwash but if you really want great oral health, you should be reaching out for the best mouthwash, toothpaste, floss or toothbrush available to you.

Generally speaking fluoride toothpastes are recommended by most dentists as they help protect the teeth, reduce the risk of infection and prevent tooth decay.

You should also research on the type of mouthwash you need and choose the one that will serve you and your teeth best.

#6: Don’t forget to use mouthwash!

Mouthwash is sometimes regarded as an essential tool in dental care and other times not so much. At the end of the day it’s really up to your personal preference whether you want to add a mouthwash to your dental regimen or not. If you do, then you’ll only be doing your oral health some more good.

When you shop for a dental mouthwash make sure you select a good mouthwash for bad breath, getting rid of cavities, and fighting off gum diseases. There are different types of mouthwashes available today, each serving a unique purpose. Make sure you do your research before you add a mouthwash to your oral health routine.

#7: Drink plenty of fluids

By fluids we mean water, not fizzy drinks, coffee or alcohol! Water can keep your mouth fresh and hydrated which will not only improve the overall health of your oral cavity, but it will also naturally get give you fresh breath.

#8: Watch your diet closely

There’s no question that coffee or tea can stain your teeth in the long run, and spicy, acidic foods can make your breath stink. If you want great oral health, you should be watching what’s on your plate closely.

It’s a good idea to incorporate more green vegetables and crunchy fruits in your diet for stronger, healthier teeth. Similarly you should be avoiding sweets (no surprises there!) and other sugary products because they are documented to be bad for the teeth!

#9: Replace your toothbrush frequently

You want to replace your toothbrush every three months because the bristles can get worn out overtime, and result in ineffective brushing. Along with that, an overused toothbrush might be harbouring a host of microscopic bacteria and you’d only be making your oral health worse by using it.

#10: Visit your dentist at least once or twice a year

Even though you might think you don’t need to see a dentist, it’s still a good idea to get a regular annual check-up!
